Today I visited the Granville Island Stage and saw a play on Rick Hansen, which was written by a parent at my school. It showed Rick’s early year and his struggles after falling out of a pickup truck and breaking his spinal cord. It also showed bravery, as Rick managed to get his life back on track and eventually started his Marathon of Hope, where he travelled over the circumference of the globe, visiting 34 countries along the way.
It was also the story of his friend Don, with the real man actually coming on stage at the end to show why he had been named the World’s Best Guitar Picker, the first Canadian to do so. Don became friends with Rick at a young age and even went on Rick’s Marathon, on a bike. It was a very good story and an even better performance by the cast. I think it really brings out the spirit of the Paralympics and what a good time to show that. In a couple of days athletes that suffered injuries just like Rick Hansen’s will be competing on the world stage.
