Today I learned that Canada will be represented by 206 athletes during the Winter Olympics from every single sport that there is in this competition.
With all the injuries to the Canadian National Ski team this year the brass have called up Georgia Simmerling, who used to go to the same school as I do now. She crashed at a race in St. Moritz, Swiss but was fine and was the last Canadian named to the team. I wish her luck.
The Olympic Torch is currently in northern Vancouver Island and passed through the towns of Port Hardy and Port McNeill, which is the hometown of Vancouver Canuck defenceman Willie Mitchell. Tomorrow the torch will cross the Georgia Strait and end up in Powell River. It will continue down the Sunshine Coast before crossing to the Sea to Sky Corridor and heading to Squamish.
Almost all of the Canadian athletes in Winter Sports have stopped their World Cup seasons by now to prepare for the Games. But there is still a Cross-Country event going on in Canmore, Alta and plenty more in Europe. Hopefully no more Canadian athletes get injured before next friday because we need every medal hope we can get.

Your blog is great! You are clearly much better informed about the Olympic Torch relay than I am so I am wondering if you know whether any Canadian medal winners from past Olympics will be carrying the torch? I have been listening for news of this and have not yet heard of any former Olympians carrying the torch here.

I’m not exactly sure but I think there will be a couple around the Lower Mainland area especially as the torch enters the downtown area. The Vancouver Sun lists some important runners of that day so if you look in it there probably will be some former Olympians included. The days it comes through Greater Vancouver are from the 8th to the 12th of February.

Today in the Sun there is a list of all the celebrity’s running with the Torch. It’s in the back of the Westcoast News, or the front section of today’s (Tuesday) paper.
